June Results

Two major events have occurred since my last posting, being the annual Kelly Shield clash, and the zone championships. We'll start with the Kelly Shield played at North Haven where unfortunately our district side was outpointed comfortably by the Lower North Coast.
The side was in contention for the the best part of the match, thanks mostly to the rinks of Ric Southam and Aden Pike, however by the close of play the LNC team had run away with the shield. Overall the team had performed well but was unable to cover the twenty six shot thrashing received by Cory Daley. The MNC must have done somthing right though with at least half of the players name in the zone's Pat Geary Shield side hailing from the MNC.

A number of the districts big guns returned to North Haven a week later to contest the zone championships. The following is courtesy of dsecretary Ian Weldon:

The Zone finals were held at North Haven this weekend in sunny, but cool conditions. Due to multiple winners the matches were spread over Saturday and Sunday. There were a lot of good bowls played and some close matches. Congratulations to all the winners, and to the runners up well done, and remember you are still your District’s champions.

Fours: John Bain, Mark Menzies, Rick Southam and Cory Daley (Park Beach) 20 defeated Jeff Fathers, Greg Brims, Peter Stockham and Peter Taylor (Westport) 17. Cory’s side got off to a slow start, however clawed their way back before taking out the title.
Triples: Carrying on their good form from the morning John Bain, Mark Menzies and Cory Daley (Park Beach) retained their 2011 Zone triples title by defeating Col Baldwin, Keith Martin and Greg Brims (Westport) 21 to 13.
Pairs: In another titanic battle Col Baldwin and Peter Stockham (Westport) proved victorious over John Bain and Rick Southam (Park Beach) winning 22 – 18.
Singles: Cory Daley (Park Beach) 31 defeated Scott Franklin (Kempsey Heights) 21 to take out his third Zone title for the weekend, and retain the Zone singles title from last year.

Senior Singles: Ken Paulsen (Westport) 31 defeated last years Zone Senior singles winner Phil Toy (Park Beach) 20.
Senior Pairs: John Hurrell and Aden Pike (Park Beach) 26 defeated Robert Dykes and Laurie Dodd (Kempsey Heights) 14 to record another win together since joining Park Beach this year.

President’s Reserve Singles: Jeff Thorn (Nambucca Heads) 31 defeated Garry Lawer (Port City) 18.
President’s Reserve Pairs: In a hard fought game Jim Eccleston and Gary Russell (Port City) picked up a 3 on the final end to defeat Bruce Moore (sub for Jim Bishop) and Graham Tindall (Coffs Harbour Ex Services) 20 – 18.

We wish all the winners the best in their various State Playoff events to be held at Soldiers Point during 13 to 21 October.
