Congratulations to Phil Toy and Cory Daley both of Park Beach colours, who have taken out the MNC Senior and Open Singles District titles respectively on Saturday.
Toy dominated the seniors from round one at Woolgoolga but found himself behind the eight ball in the final against club mate Barry Garner, trailing by six shots mid way through the match. Toy's experience and determination kicked in to see him finish strongly to claim his second district senior singles title. Despite the loss Barry garner should also be congratulated on reaching his first final, having taken the scalps of many highly rated players on his way to the decider. Toy defeated Wayne Rowbottom 31-21 in the first semi final whilst Garner demolished Vic Watkins 31-7 in their clash.
The final score in the decider was 31-23.
Daley also found the early going tough in the open singles final played at Sawtell, allowing his opponent Graham Green to reach nine shots before opening his account. For the first ninety minutes Green appeared the man most likely, playing the crucial shots at the right time, however Daley found another gear to pull himself back into the contest, and drawing on experience from his previous successes proceeded to throw maximum length ends. The result was a swift change in the dynamic of the match, Daley finishing in a canter to record a 31-21 victory. Daley now joins an elite class of bowlers who have won this event three times, with only Alan Carver and Kent Price having also managed to hold the trophy on three occasions. Daley having lost his first final to Carver in 2005. For Green this was his first singles final on the MNC but his third overall having reached the final on two separate occasions in the southern zones of the state. It will only be a matter of time as to when he finishes on the right side of a finals score board.
Toy and Daley join Hans Katala as the singles representative for the MNC at the zone championships in June where they will attempt to emulate the success of junior Josh Forbes who recently took out the junior division zone title as previously posted.

Til next time...

Chippy
