"Congratulations to John Bain, Mark Menzies and Cory Daley
from Park Beach who defeated Peter Clarke, Ian Weldon and P.T. Clarke from
Sawtell 21 to 15 in a hard fought final to win the 2012 District Triples held
at Macksville today.
In a tightly contested final dominated by the two skips
scores were level on 6 separate occasions, with scores 12 all after 19 ends – a
total of 24 shots scored.
Cory’s side picked up 5 shots on the next two ends, and
despite picking up a 3 on the 22nd end to narrow the margin, P.T.’s team
couldn’t bridge the gap and Cory’s side went on to retain the title they won
last year.
The win gives John Bain the opportunity of scoring a rare
grand slam of District events, having already won the fours and pairs, with
only the singles to go.
We wish them all the best in the Zone playoffs to be played
at North Haven over the weekend of June 23/24 against their opponents who are
Col Baldwin, Keith Martin and Greg Brims from Westport.
On behalf of the District, and the players, many thanks to
Macksville for all their efforts in the running of this event."
What Ian hasn't mentioned is that the match hung in the balance and was moving in favour of the Sawtell side until a fortuitous wick saved four shots for the Park Beach side when already trailing by three with nine ends remaining. The momentum seemed to shift after this end back to the defending champions who made every post a winner over the closing stages. The Park Beach side were quick to acknowledge the part this lucky result played in the context of the match as the final result could have differed greatly had this not occurred. Funny game this bowls...
All six should be commended on the good sportsmanship displayed and the high level of bowls exhibited proved very entertaining for the spectators who were present.
Congrats to the finalists on a great match!
Chippy
