Zone Pennant Finals 2012

Only two of the seven Mid North Coast Grades walked away with zone flags in a tough day at the office yesterday. Of the three grades played at Woolgoolga not one MNC side tasted success whilst the sides that travelled to North Haven fared better with two of the four grades earning a place at the state championships.
At Woolgoolga, Park Beach started well against their North Haven opponents in Grade Seven and were well in contention in the second half trailing by just two before North Haven kicked clear for the win.
North Beach performed well against Crescent Head in Grade Six however with ex state star Joel Bourke playing for them, the side from the LNC maintained a lead to the finish.
Kew got out of the blocks quickly in Grade Five not giving Coffs Ex Services any hope of taking advantage of the similar surface to their own club. Kew continued their dominance all the way to the last end to register a comfortable victory and book themselves a berth at the state finals.

At North Haven , the host club claimed its second zone flag for the day when they defeated Urunga in the Grade Four final.Urunga battled hard but with the home town support North Haven was too strong.
Kew also took a second flag, when they out muscled Coffs Ex Services in Grade Three. Coffs were in striking distance for the majority of the match but ran out of puff in the closing stages.

Finally in Grade Two there was something for the MNC to celebrate when Nambucca Heads came from a big way behind to claim the zone flag and will now travel to Tuncurry to contest that state finals. Nambucca have managed to keep a number of the side from the team that won the number three zone flag last year.
Park Beach surprised Westport in Grade One, dominating the final third of what was an intense clash until this point to win their fourth straight zone flag. The match was keenly contested with a large cache of supporters for the Lower North Coast however the strong finish from Parky kept the crowd relatively quiet. The side will now travel to The Entrance where they will hope to improve on last years effort which saw them win two from their three matches.

Attention will now turn back to the next rounds of the MNC singles to be played this Saturday and Sunday.

Cheers,

Chippy
