The first of the 2012 district champions were crowned today as the finals of the junior singles and open fours were played at West Coffs and Park Beach respectively, with members from the host clubs victorious in both. Corey Wedlock got his campaign to win all three junior events under way with a convincing 31 - 19 victory over Park Beach's Josh Hicks. Hicks despite the loss should be commended on reaching the final after having a break from the game over the last six months or so. The two finalists will join forces in the junior pairs and will have to go in as short price favourites...
The fours final saw two Park Beach sides clash in a local derby final. John Bain, Mark Menzies, Ric Southam & Cory Daley had the better of the opening exchanges against Steve Plumb, John Hurrell, Dennis Brown and Aden Pike to move out to a 9 - 4 lead. A three followed by a five blew the game wide open with Daley's side advancing to a 21 - 9 lead.
Pike's men fought hard to get back to within nine shots but with ends running out the side had to take risks which didn't get the desired results, Daley and company closing out the match 28 - 11 and earning a chance to play for the zone title in June.
Next weekend will see round five of pennants and the opening rounds of the MNC pairs events...
